General description
Bone γ-carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP) or osteocalcin (OCN) is a non-collagenous bone matrix protein expressed by osteoblasts. It possesses a Gla (γ carboxyglutamate) domain. The gene encoding OCN is localized on human chromosome 1q22.
Calcium-binding protein found in dentin and possibly other mineralized tissues.
Application
Human osteocalcin fragment 1-49 has been used for the identification and characterization of glycation adducts on osteocalcin. It has also been used to study its effects on the differentiation of mouse myoblast cell line C2C12.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Bone γ-carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP) regulates osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells. It has a role in bone turnover and mineralization. The protein also has a role in energy metabolism. BGLAP may act as a mediator between glucose metabolism and bone tissue.
Packaging
Bottomless glass bottle. Contents are inside inserted fused cone.
