3,4-Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, Mtv, or Super Coke, is a new designer drug and stimulant with cases of abuse reported in Europe and the US. In mid- to late-2010, MDPV started appearing in the US as a legal drug alternative marketed as “bath salts” under names including Ivory Wave, Tranquility, and Cloud 9. This certified solution standard offers numerous applications in GC/MS or LC/MS testing from forensic analysis and clinical toxicology to urine drug monitoring.

This article highlights the impact that sample matrix effects can have on LC/MS response and discusses two novel approaches to reduce it.

LC-MS/MS is a powerful tool that brings numerous benefits to the clinical sample analysis arena. However, due to the complexity of the instrumentation there are some unique challenges that also accompany these benefits. Even following sample extraction and cleanup, matrix effects from the samples can cause interferences or impact ionization efficiency.
