脂質A分子は、グラム陰性細菌が産生するエンドトキシンの主な成分を固定する脂質膜を構成します。 脂質A分子は、免疫応答を誘導します。 構造上、脂質A分子は2つのグルコサミンユニットで構成され、脂質アシル鎖の数ならびにリン酸化反応の同一性および程度が種によって異なります。

生物化学的／生理学的作用
リポポリサッカライド（LPS）は、グラム陰性細菌の細胞壁に特徴的な化合物です。LPSとその脂質A成分は、一般的な病原体関連分子パターン（PAMP）を認識するToll様受容体タンパク質ファミリーに属するToll様受容体4（TLR4）を介して自然免疫系の細胞を刺激します。
脂質Aには、マクロファージ、T細胞、B細胞の活性化を含めた免疫賦活アジュバント活性があります。研究から、脂質Aは、Th2よりもTh1を強く活性化することが明らかになっています。
