General description

4-Nitrophenol is a phenolic compound present as a chemical intermediate and breakdown product during the production of organophosphorus insecticide derivatives of parathion. It is an intermediate during the synthesis of paracetamol.[90] 4-Nitrophenol is a chromogenic catalytic by product of the synthetic substrate 4-nitrophenyl phosphate. It is majorly used as a reference standard in alkaline phosphatase assay.[75] 4-Nitrophenol is nonbiodegradable and its derivatives are used for herbicide and fungicide production.[24]

Application

4-Nitrophenol solution has been used:
  • in the generation of standard curve for quantifying alkaline phosphatase activity of mesenchymal stem cells
[25]
  • bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs)
  • [54]
  • for quantifying β-hexosaminidase activity in HeLa cells
  • [27]
  • as a standard for calorimetric determination of alkaline phosphatase activity at 405 nm
  • [85]
  • for assessing the β-hexosamindase activity
  • [87]
