General description

Sodium carbonate (Soda) is a white salt. It can be synthesized by the electrolysis of molten sodium hydroxide or sodium chloride.

Application

Sodium carbonate may be used for the determination of total polyphenolic index of wine products from grape by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. It has been used to compose the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) coating buffer. It may be used to prepare the antibody coating buffer for use in IGF-I kinase receptor activation assay (KIRA) assay.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Buffer component, may be used for the removal of peripheral membrane proteins.

At present, the circulating bioactivity of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is estimated by immunological measurements of IGF-I levels. However, immunoassays ignore the modifying effects of the IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) on the interaction between IGF-I and the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR).

Trousseau described spontaneous, recurrent superficial migratory thrombophlebitis associated with occult cancers, and this was later correlated with disseminated microangiopathy (platelet-rich clots in small blood vessels).
