General description

C16:0 Ceramide (d18:2(4E,8Z)/16:0) or N-palmitoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine (d18:2(4E,8Z) base) is a long chain ceramide derived from sphingosine containing two double bonds with palmitic acid. C16:0 Ceramide synthesis is catalyzed by the enzyme ceramide synthase 6 (CerS6).

Biochem/physiol Actions

C16:0-ceramide facilitates obesity-related insulin resistance. It exhibits pro-apoptotic function. Elevated levels of C16:0-ceramide has been observed in adipose tissue of obese patients.

Ceramides increase during obesity and promote insulin resistance. Ceramides vary in acyl-chain lengths from C14:0 to C30:0 and are synthesized by six ceramide synthase enzymes (CerS1-6). It remains unresolved whether obesity-associated alterations of specific CerSs and their defined acyl-chain length
