Solute carrier family 39 member 6 (SLC39A6) belongs to the member of ZIP family of zinc transporters. The protein is expressed in breast, prostate, placenta, kidney, pituitary and corpus callosum. The gene is located on human chromosome 18q12.2.

Solute carrier family 39 member 6 (SLC39A6) enhances the nuclear translocation of the transcriptional factor Snail. It induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during embryonic development. The protein maintains cellular zinc homeostasis, which is required for cellular growth and differentiation. It is a prognostic biomarker for breast cancer. It may be a potential therapeutic target for inhibiting esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).[107}
