Claycomb培地はHL-1細胞株を確立したWilliam Claycomb博士にちなんで名付けられ、マウスの心筋細胞の増殖に特化しています。HL-1は、分化した心筋細胞の表現型と収縮活性とをin vitro維持できる細胞株として初めて確立されました。HL-1細胞株は、心筋梗塞に続発する心筋細胞の肥大化に関する研究, 心臓に対する新しい治療薬や治療法の試験, 高レベルの心筋タンパク質の産生, および成熟心筋細胞に特異的な遺伝子に関する研究に使用されます。100 μMのノルエピネフリン, 10%のウシ胎児血清(FBS), および4 mMのL-グルタミンを添加されたClaycomb培地は、HL-1細胞株とその成熟心筋細胞の性質を維持します。光学顕微鏡で観察すると、個々のHL-1細胞やその集団が収縮し、心筋細胞がコンフルエントに達する頃にはその収縮がより活発に起こっている様子を見ることができます。
