Application

It is intended to be used as a USP reference standard in specified quality tests and assays.(1)
Also used to prepare the standard solution for identification and assay of tobramycin and its different dosage forms using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and liquid chromatography (LC) combined with UV detection at 365 nm respectively, as prescribed in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for the following monographs:
  • Tobramycin
  • Tobramycin for Injection
  • Tobramycin Ophthalmic Ointment
  • Tobramycin Ophthalmic Solution
  • Tobramycin Injection
  • Tobramycin Sulfate
  • Tobramycin and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension
  • Tobramycin Inhalation Solution
  • Tobramycin and Fluorometholone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension
  • Tobramycin and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Ointment

Biochem/physiol Actions

Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside.
Mode of Action: Binds to 70S ribosomal subunit; inhibits translocation; elicits miscoding.
Spectrum of Activity: Gram negative bacteria. Not effective against Enterococci.
