Gene Information

human ... CD163(9332)

General description

Cluster of differentiation 163 (CD163) is a hemoglobin scavenger receptor, encoded by a gene mapped to human chromosome 12p13.31. It is expressed on the surface of activated macrophages. The encoded protein is a member of scavenger receptor cysteine-rich family (SRCR) and is specifically expressed on cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage.

Specificity

The antibody detects endogenous levels of total CD163 protein.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide corresponding to residues near the C terminal of human CD163 molecule

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cluster of differentiation 163 (CD163) modulates anti-inflammatory functions and has a role in hemoglobin-haptoglobin clearance. Various cytokines influence the expression of CD163. It may be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Soluble CD163 level in serum acts as a potent indicator of the progression of cirrhosis and portal hypertension.
