General description

Supelclean PSA, Discovery® C18, and Spherical Carbon
This multi-bed solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge was designed for the cleanup of extracts of difficult matrices such as dry commodities (tea, spices, coffee, etc.) prior to pesticide residue analysis, typically performed by GC/MSMS and LC/MS/MS. These types of samples can contain pigments and oils, and may not be sufficiently cleaned using a standard QuEChERS cleanup.
The top bed consists of a mixture of PSA/C18 and a graphitized, spherical carbon. PSA removes acidic interferences, C18 retains some hydrophobic interferences, and carbon removes pigments. The variety of carbon used in this cartridge was engineered to remove sufficient pigmentation while allowing for better recoveries of compounds with planar structures. The bottom bed of the cartridge contains Z-Sep, which is a zirconia-coated silica. Z-Sep removes oily residues, and provides additional pigment removal.
The cartridge can be used for cleanup of acetonitrile extracts to be analyzed by either GC or HPLC.

A procedure for cleanup of green tea extracts provides low background and allowed for the analysis of more pesticides at lower levels than QuEChERS. Uses less solvents and no toluene.

Pesticide residue testing of turmeric and other (dried) spices is challenging due to their complex compositions and high matrix. An efficient SPE clean-up can be achieved by a new Dual-layer cartridge.

The odor and pungency of ginger is due to the presence of terpenes, gingerols and shogaols. These compounds contribute to the highly complex matrix of ginger, which subsequently presents a challenge in low level analyses of contaminants. A novel 2-layer SPE cartridge efficiently reduces background for pesticide determination.
