General description

Silica gel is a rigid 3D network of colloidal silica. It is exclusively used as a support material for the active titanium(III) centers in Ziegler-Natta catalysts. Silica gel allows a controlled fragmentation leading to form uniform polymer particles with narrow particle size distribution and high bulk density. Silica gel is classified as below:
a. Aquagel - pores are filled with water
b. Xerogel - by the process of evaporation, aqueous phase in the pores are removed
c. Aerogel - solvent removed by supercritical extraction.

Application

  • Flexible and Compressible Nanostructure-Assembled Aramid Nanofiber/Silica Composites Aerogel: This study explores the development of flexible and compressible silica-based aerogels, highlighting their potential in lightweight construction and thermal insulation applications, particularly useful for research in material science and industrial manufacturing (Zhang et al., 2024).
  • Factors Affecting Silica/Cellulose Nanocomposite Prepared via the Sol-Gel Technique: A Review: This review discusses the synthesis of silica/cellulose nanocomposites using the sol-gel method, emphasizing the impact of various factors on the material properties, relevant for researchers in materials science and environmental applications (Shange et al., 2024).
  • Rational synthesis of methylsilsesquioxane aerogels addressing thermal load and compression recovery issues in Li-ion batteries: This research presents the development of silica aerogels for use in enhancing the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries, crucial for researchers in energy storage and industrial applications (Li et al., 2024).
  • Isolation, characterization, identification and quantification of 6-F oxyphenisatin dipropionate, a novel illegal additive, from a fruit-flavored jelly: Demonstrating the use of silica gel in chromatographic techniques for detecting illegal additives in food products, this study is vital for food safety and environmental testing laboratories (Xia et al., 2024).
