General description

Sec8/Exoc4 is a component of the exocyst complex which is a multi-protein complex used for docking of exocytic vesicles with fusion sites on the plasma membrane. The exocyst complex is essential for exocytosis which is the process whereby proteins, hormones, transmitters etc. are transported and released to the extracellular environment. The exocyst complex is composed of EXOC1, EXOC2, EXOC3, EXOC4, EXOC5, EXOC6, EXOC7 and EXOC8. Sec8/Exoc4 appears to be important for tethering of secretory vesicles to specific regions on the plasma membrane. It seems particularly important in normal development for growth and morphological change by allowing the secretion of matrix metalloproteinases such as MMP2 or MMP9 in discrete locations. Knockdowns exhibit reduced cellular proliferation as well as invasive activities as well. As such Sec8/Exoc4 is important in tumor growth and invasion as well, thus it is also a current target for cancer therapy.

Immunogen

Recombinant protein corresponding to rat Sec8/Exoc4.

The exocyst is an evolutionarily conserved octameric protein complex that tethers post-Golgi secretory vesicles at the plasma membrane for exocytosis. To elucidate the mechanism of vesicle tethering, it is important to understand how the exocyst physically associates with the plasma
