Pro-opiomelanocortin (UniProt: P01189; also known as POMC, Corticotropin-lipotropin) is encoded by the POMC gene (Gene ID: 5443) in human. POMC is a prohormone that gives rise to several biologically active peptides that are expressed primarily in the pituitary and brain. It is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-26), which is subsequently cleaved off to produce the mature form that is further proteolytically cleaved into eleven different peptides, including NPP (aa 27-102), -MSH (aa 77-87), -MSH (aa 138-150), Corticotropin (ACTH; aa 138-176), β-MSH (aa 217-234), Met-enkephalin (aa 237-241), and β-Endorphin (aa 237-267). POMC-derived peptides are also found in immune cells and are well conserved during evolution. In nervous system POMC neurons are an integral part of the central melanocortin system that regulates feeding behavior. Mutations in POMC gene have been linked to obesity and early-onset obesity with adrenal deficiency. This ZooMAb^® recombinant monoclonal antibody, generated by our propriety technology, offers significantly enhanced specificity, affinity, reproducibility, and stability over conventional monoclonals.
