Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF, MMIF and GIF) is a protein encoded by the MIF gene in humans and is mapped to chromosome 10. It is a potent cytokine that plays an important role in the regulation of immune responses. It is implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. It may also be implicated in both types of diabetes.
