膜联蛋白是普遍存在的同源蛋白，在钙存在的情况下结合磷脂。参与凋亡过程的细胞变化包括早期磷脂不对称的损失。这种现象是普遍存在的，不局限于刺激或哺乳动物细胞，也发生在昆虫和植物细胞中。在活细胞中，磷脂酰丝氨酸通过Mg2+ATP依赖酶氨磷脂转位酶传输至脂二层内部。发生细胞凋亡时，磷脂酰丝氨酸转运到细胞膜的外表面。磷脂酰丝氨酸从内膜表面到外膜表面的移动是细胞凋亡的早期指标，膜联蛋白V及其偶联物与磷脂酰丝氨酸相互作用且具有较强的特异性，可用于检测细胞凋亡。膜联蛋白V偶联物可用于检测明显早于基于DNA分析的凋亡细胞。 荧光染料标记的膜联蛋白V可应用于流式细胞术、荧光显微镜和激光扫描细胞术中。
