Tributyltin chloride is a salt derivative of tributyltin which is an organotin compound.

Tributyltin chloride can be used as a precursor for the preparation of tributyltin (TBT) which may be used as a reference standard for the analysis of TBT in:

• Seawater samples by gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with electron ionization (EI) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) modes of operation.
• Sediment samples by static headspace (SHS) GC combined with MS operating in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode.
• Environmental water sample matrices by stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with sodium tetrahydridoborate (NaBH₄)-based in-situ derivatization combined with large-volume injection (LVI) GC-MS operating under the SIM mode of detection.
• Natural waters by LVI using programmed temperature vaporization (PTV) injector-GC combined with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) MS.
