General description

The product of this gene is an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism, and it encodes cytosolic acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase. This gene shows complementary overlapping with the 3-prime region of the TCP1 gene in both mouse and human. These genes are encoded on opposite strands of DNA, as well as in opposite transcriptional orientation. (provided by RefSeq)

Immunogen

ACAT2 (AAH00408, 1 a.a. ~ 397 a.a) full-length recombinant protein with GST tag. MW of the GST tag alone is 26 KDa.

Biochem/physiol Actions

ACAT2 (acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase 2) is responsible for the production of cholesteryl esters from cholesterol and fatty acids. In mouse model, absence of intestinal or hepatic ACAT2 results in atheroprotective effects. Thus, it is suggested as a target for treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Mutations in this gene are associated with changes in plasma lipid levels and coronary artery disease (CAD) risk.

Acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (ACAT2) plays a critical role in the formation of cholesteryl esters from cholesterol and fatty acids, and is a potential target for treating hypercholesterolemia. We recently reported the significant effects of two human ACAT2 gene polymorphisms
