Gene Information

human ... ZEB2(9839)

General description

Smad-interacting protein 1 (SIP1, SMADIP1), also known as Zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 2 (ZEB2), and Zinc finger homeobox protein 1b (ZFHX1B, ZFX1B), is a transcriptional inhibitor that binds to DNA sequence 5′-CACCT-3′ in different promoters and interacts with activated SMADs. ZEB2 has been shown to repress the transcription of the E-cadherin gene and induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition, a genetic program controlling cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing in vitro. It is suggested that ZEB2 contributes to tumor progression since it’s been demonstrated to protect cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis. Recent studies have shown that ZEB2 is often observed in the cytoplasm in numerous cancer tissues, implying that its localization may be regulated in normal and tumor tissues. Mutations in this gene are also associated with Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWIS), also known as Hirschsprung disease-mental syndrome.

Smad-interacting protein 1 (SIP1, also known as ZEB2) represses the transcription of E-cadherin and mediates epithelial-mesenchymal transition in development and tumor metastasis. Due to the lack of human SIP1-specific antibodies, its expression in human tumor tissues has not been studied
