General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a critical component of the mucosal layer of the colon and is the most common phospholipid in mammalian membranes. It is a strong bilayer-forming lipid.
Total Egg Extract is prepared by extracting powdered egg yolk with methanol. The methanol extract is partitioned with chloroform and deionized water, and the chloroform phase containing the organic soluble lipids is concentrated.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance. It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
