General description

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the most dominantly generated antibody isotype. They are majorly secreted in the intestinal mucosa. IgA is present in colostrum, serum, saliva, and nasal fluid. It exists in two isotypic forms namely: IgA1 and IgA2. It is generated as secretory IgA (sIgA) and serum IgA. Serum IgA is present in the dimeric form linked by disulfide bond with an additional J chain. sIgA occurs in a monomeric form with two heavy and two light chains.

Application

Human IgA, Plasma has been used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) initiates the alternative pathway of the complement system to elicit protective functions. It facilitates antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) by attaching to leukocytes. This interaction boosts microbial destruction. IgA performances the first line of defense in antigen clearance. It avoids proteolysis and hinders the uptake of viral, bacterial, or antigen attachment. It lowers inflammation aroused by the classical pathway complement activation.
