(R)-(+)-Propylene oxide is commonly employed as a chiral building block or intermediate in the synthesis of chiral compounds. For example, it can be used to synthesize cyclic propylene carbonate by the reaction with CO₂ in the presence of a chiral catalyst. It is also used as a starting material for the preparation of magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents that can be used for in vivo detection of β-galactosidase.
