一般說明
硫酸镁具有抗惊厥、抗炎和血管舒张的特性。硫酸镁可以舒缓平滑肌。在急性哮喘患者中，静脉注射和雾化吸入硫酸镁（作为添加剂），都改善了肺功能。硫酸镁可减少高危孕妇的早产。在植物组织培养基，和原生质体培养基中，七水合硫酸镁用作 Mg2+离子的来源。
應用
七水合硫酸镁已用于：
- 制备Scott′s 自来水替代品，作为核染色的蓝色试剂
- 作为稳定化溶液的一个组分，用于基质辅助激光解吸/电离质谱（MALDI-MS）分离垂体细胞
- 作为人工海水制备中的添加剂，用于培养海蜗牛（Aplysia californica）和改良的Gey's平衡盐溶液
