General description

Universal Beer Agar is a base medium supplemented with beer. Its characteristics are closer to natural environmental conditions found in a typical brewery. Thus, it supports the growth of more lactic acid bacteria and yields larger colonies in a shorter time than other brewer’s media. The addition of beer gives the medium some selectivity to the organisms adapted to existing conditions in the brewery. Hop and alcohol inhibit the growth of many other microorganisms, which are not adapted to the beer matrix.

Application

Universal Beer Agar is suitable for culturing spoilage microorganisms of significance in the brewing industry (bacteria like Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, Acetobacter, and yeasts).

Preparation Note

Suspend 62.16 g in 750 ml of distilled water. Heat to boiling to dissolve the medium completely. Add 250 ml beer, without degassing, to the hot medium and mix gently. Dispense as desired and sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 10 minutes. If required, add 1 ug/ml (Cat. No. 01810) of Cycloheximide to sterile medium prior to dispensing.

Footnote

We offer two media types: the superior granulated GranuCult® and the cost-efficient powdered NutriSelect® culture media, depending on your needs.
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.

Traditional methods are based morphology, staining methods, enzyme reactions (metabolism) and diverse media.

Molecular biology-based methods, like PCR, can be used for lactobacilli detection. However, they are often quite expensive. We provide a revolutionary molecular biology method that is rapid, easy, and cost-effective.

Today, diverse studies report the benefits of probiotics, such as inhibitory effects on pathogens, aid in the management or prevention of chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases or atopic syndromes, and support to the immune system. Potential beneficial applications abound, researchers continue to evaluate the effictiveness and clarify the mechanisms of action of probiotics.

Our team of scientists has experience in all areas of research including Life Science, Material Science, Chemical Synthesis, Chromatography, Analytical and many others.
