In chicken, VMO1 (vitelline membrane outer layer 1 homolog) is mainly present in the outer layer of the vitelline membrane of eggs and forms a rigid structure for maintaining the shape of the egg. It is needed for separating the yolk from the egg white, thereby providing protection from bacterial infection.
