Description générale

RING finger protein 2 (RNF2), also known as RNF1b, consists of 336 amino acids and it belongs to PcG (polycomb-group) protein family. This protein is encoded by the gene mapped on human chromosome 1q25.3. The encoded protein is characterized with a unique C3HC4 RING finger motif.

Application

The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. Actions biochimiques/physiologiques

RING finger protein 2 (RNF2), in association with prohibitin, regulates the activity of E2F transcription factor 1(E2F1) by the direct, prohibitin-mediated pathway and the indirect, p16-mediated pathway. Rnf2 might act as a vital assembly factor in PRC (Polycomb repressive complex), which is required for mammalian development. Decrease in the expression of Rnf2 or ring1b causes gastrulation arrest and cell cycle inhibition. Overexpression of RNF2 results in pathogenesis of urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB). RNF2 interacts with E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes and display E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. RNF2 plays a crucial role in cancer cell survival and proliferation, therefore it can serve as a potential therapeutic target for cancer treatment and prevention.
