General description
Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is bound in a single chain cross-linked with 17 cysteine residues. It comprises three homologous, structurally different domains and two sub-domains each. This globular, α-helical, non-glycosylated protein is produced in the liver.
Application
Bovine Serum Albumin solution has been used:
- to study the effects of plasma protein on sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs)
- to histologically evaluate the implanted allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) alginate constructs
- as a component of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) to treat red blood cells (RBC) for sample preparation
Biochem/physiol Actions
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) is the most widely used blocking agent in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). It is also the main constituent of cell culture media. BSA promotes the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) differentiation and assists the circulation of drugs, hormones, and fatty acids.

The blood coagulation cascade involves the human coagulation factors thrombin and an activated factor VII (fVIIa). Thrombin and fVIIa are vitamin-K-dependent clotting factors associated with bleeding, bleeding complications and disorders. Thrombin and fVIIa cause excessive bleeding when treated with vitamin-K

In avian species, maternal blood immunoglobulin Y (IgY) is transferred to the egg yolks of maturing oocytes, but the mechanism underlying this transfer is unknown. To gain insight into the mechanism of maternal IgY transfer in quail, we established an

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are promising candidates for use as a biological therapeutic. Since locally injected MSC disappear within a few weeks, we hypothesize that efficacy of MSC can be enhanced by prolonging their presence. Previously, encapsulation in alginate was

Serum albumin is the major determinant of blood colloidal osmotic pressure acting as a depot and distributor of compounds including drugs. In humans, serum albumin exhibits an unusually long half-life mainly due to protection from catabolism by neonatal Fc receptor

As mass cytometry (MC) is implemented in clinical settings, the need for robust, validated protocols that reduce batch effects between samples becomes increasingly important. Here, we present a streamlined MC workflow for high-throughput staining that generates reproducible data for up
