General description

(±)-Propylene oxide (PPO) belongs to the class of monomers known as epoxides or oxiranes. It is used as a raw material in the preparation n of polyurethane foam and polyether polyols, which are used in the production of polyurethane elastomers, polyurethane plastics, adhesives, sealants, and coatings. These materials find applications in industries such as automotive, construction, electronics, and textiles. PPO-based polymers possess flexibility and elasticity as inherent properties, making them well-suited for applications that demand materials with excellent resilience, stretchability, and impact resistance. Additionally, PPO-derived polymers are biocompatible, which makes them suitable for applications in various fields such as biomedical engineering, drug delivery, and tissue engineering.

Application

Propylene oxide can be used as a starting material to synthesize:
  • Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), a biodegradable and biocompatible polyester, by carbonylative polymerization.
  • Poly (propylene-ram-ε-caprolactone carbonate) (PPCL) and poly (propylene carbonate) (PPC), which are applicable as drug carriers.
Propylene oxide may be used in the production of polyether polyols, propylene glycols, propylene glycol ethers.
