Gene Information

human ... SOD2(6648)

General description

The SOD2 (superoxide dismutase 2) gene is mapped to human chromosome 6q25.3. The encoded protein functions as a tetramer and is localized to mitochondria.

Immunogen

synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acid residues 183-199 of human superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), conjugated to KLH. The corresponding sequence is conserved in many eukaryotes.

Application

Anti-Superoxide Dismutase (MnSOD) (DD-17)-Cy3 antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunohistochemistry.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) is an antioxidant enzyme and catalyzes the conversion of superoxide to hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. The enzyme offers protection against oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species and is also radioprotective. The gene is associated with the metastasis and invasion process of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma. Manganese SOD is involved in detoxification.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.
