荧光素是一种杂环二酮，与伯胺、氨基酸、肽和蛋白质反应形成荧光产物。过量的试剂及其降解产物不发荧光。含有蛋白质加氟胺的溶液的荧光强度与存在的游离胺基团量相当。这是荧光蛋白测定的基本原理。氟胺用作鉴定制药工业所用各类化合物的衍生剂，如奥司他韦、青霉胺、磺酰胺残基、赖诺普利、甲氨蝶呤、维巴替林和加巴喷丁。
應用
荧光素用作染色剂，通过共聚焦扫描激光显微镜（CSLM）定位小米淀粉表面的颗粒蛋白以及小米粉中的蛋白质。这一物质还用于对氨基苯甲酸光度测定。
