General description

Method: colorimetric, indophenol blue, with color card and comparator block with long test tubes 0.025-0.050-0.075-0.10-0.15-0.20-0.25-0.30-0.40 mg/l NH4 0.02-0.04-0.06-0.08-0.12-0.16-0.19-0.23-0.31 mg/l NH4-N MQuant®
With the MQuant® Ammonium test (formally MColortest®) ammonium ions can be detected in e.g. groundwater and surface water, seawater, drinking water and aquarium water. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) occurs partly in the form of ammonium ions and partly as ammonia. A pH-dependent equilibrium exists between the two forms.

Method
In strongly alkaline solution ammonia reacts with a chlorinating agent to form monochloramine. This in turn reacts with thymol to form a blue indophenol derivative. Due to the intrinsic yellow coloration of the reagent blank, the measurement solution is yellow-green to green in color. The ammonium concentration is measured semiquantitatively by visual comparison of the color of the measurement solution with the color fields of a color card. The unique brilliance of the print and their fine color graduation allow precise analyses, even at the lower end of the concentration range. Due to the long test tubes a sensitive measurement range can be covered.

This test is suitable for ammonium determination in
  • Groundwater and surface water
  • Drinking water and mineral water
  • Wastewater
  • Aquarium water, waters from aquaculture
  • Boiler and boiler feed water, cooling water
  • Swimming-pool water
  • Nutrient solutions for fertilization
  • Food after appropriate sample pretreatment

This test is not suited for seawater.

Application

  • Evaluation of Water Ammonium Ion Test Kit and Its Feasibility for the Analysis of Protein in Food.: This study assesses a water ammonium ion test kit′s application in food protein analysis, highlighting its potential benefits for ensuring food safety and quality (Wu et al., 2022).

  • Technical note: Evaluation of a colorimetric point-of-care test for measuring urine ammonium concentration in periparturient dairy cattle.: Discusses a colorimetric point-of-care test for measuring urine ammonium in dairy cattle, crucial for animal health monitoring and management (Megahed & Constable, 2020).
