General description

Method: colorimetric, indophenol blue, with color card and sliding comparator 0.2 - 0.4 - 0.6 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 mg/l NH₄⁺ MQuant®
This MQuant® Ammonium test (formally MColortest®) is suitable for the colorimetric determination using the easy to use color card. The evaluation considers the untreated sample so even turbid and colored water samples can be analyzed. The test measures both ammonium ions and dissolved ammonia in e.g. groundwater and surface water, drinking water and aquarium water. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) occurs partly in the form of ammonium ions and partly as ammonia. A pH-dependent equilibrium exists between the two forms.

Method
In strongly alkaline solution ammonium nitrogen is present almost entirely as ammonia, which reacts with a chlorinating agent to form monochloramine. This in turn reacts with thymol to form a blue indophenol derivative. Due to the intrinsic yellow coloration of the reagent blank, the measurement solution is yellow-green to green in color. The ammonium concentration is measured semiquantitatively by allocating the color to a value on a reference scale.

The test can be used for ammonium determination in:
  • Groundwater and surface water
  • Drinking water and mineral water
  • Wastewater
  • Process water
  • Aquarium water, waters from aquaculture
  • Boiler and boiler feed water, cooling water
  • Swimming-pool water
  • Nutrient solutions for fertilization
  • Soils and food after appropriate sample pretreatment

This test is not suited for seawater.
