Application

New Coccine has been used to determine its decolorization by fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus sajorcaju.

Biochem/physiol Actions

New Coccine also referred to as ponceau 4 R, is a synthetic red tar dye. It belongs to the group of azo dyes. New Coccine is extensively used as a food colorant. When the intact dye reaches the intestine, it cause colon specific DNA damage in mice.
