Gene Information

human ... AAPK1(5562)

General description

Anti-AMPK α antibody detects endogenous levels of total AMPK α protein.
The AMPK α (protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit α1) gene is located on human chromosome 5p13.1. The gene is evolutionarily conserved.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human AMPK alpha.

Immunogen Range: 140-189

Application

Anti-AMPK α antibody produced in rabbit has been used in immunohistochemistry.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The AMPK α (protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit α1) gene is associated with the regulation of cell cycle, cell proliferation, energy metabolism and inhibition of rapamycin-pathway. Therefore, it plays an important role in carcinogenesis. From recent studies, variation in the gene is known to be involved in gastric cancer. AMPK α might induce anti-inflammatory response in adipose tissue, upon its activation resulting in a beneficial effect in obesity. Decreased cellular ATP or AMP is known to stimulate AMPK enzyme. Activated AMPK stimulates pathways such as mitochondrial biogenesis, glucose transport in muscle and mitochondrial biogenesis, in order to replenish cellular ATP. On the other hand, it prevents anabolic pathways that consume ATP including biosynthesis of fatty acid and cholesterol as well as adipogenesis. The AMPK signaling pathway is generally stimulated in response to stress, energy deficiency and/or oxygen inadequacy.
