Pyrogallol has been used:

• in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) assay
• to induce modification in mitochondrial DNA and to characterize the same
• as a standard to confirm the presence of pyrogallol in butanol fraction of white rose petal extract

Pyrogallol induces superoxide anion (O₂^-) generation and in the presence of metal ions, it stimulates oxidative damage to DNA and lipids.
