Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate is a crystalline aluminum salt of nitric acid primarily used as a catalyst in manufacturing petroleum products, including gasoline and other fuels. It is also used in the production of aluminum oxide and the fabrication of cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate can be used as a precursor to synthesize:
- AlF3-coated LiCoO2, which is used to prepare a blend composite cathode with Li [Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3] O2 for Li-ion batteries.
- Disperse alumina.
- Alumina gel by sol-gel method and pure gamma alumina by hydrolysis.
- Nanocrystalline ZnAl2O4 by hydrothermal method.
- Magnesium aluminum layered hydroxides which are applicable as nanocontainers of corrosion inhibitors for protective organic coatings.
