General description

Isopropanol is a clear, colorless, polar organic solvent commonly used in chemistry and molecular biology laboratories. It will dissolve a wide range of chemicals, and evaporates quickly. This product (2-propanol) is designated as molecular biology grade and is suitable for the precipitation of nucleic acids.

Protocols for the use of isopropanol:

  • DNA precipitation from mammalian tissue, ethidium bromide extraction from DNA samples, and RNA isolation from cells and tissues.
  • Protein crystallization.
  • Isolate retinoids from biological matrices for HPLC and HPLC-MS analysis.

Application

2-Propanol has been used:
  • in DNA and RNA extraction
  • for determination of hydroxyproline levels(The Merck Index, 12th ed)
  • for checking cell viability by MTT assay
  • in microarray hybridization
Suitable for use in DNA precipitation using standard protocols. Also suitable as a solvent for making solutions for molecular biology applications.
