General description

A long-term urinary metabolite of hydromorphone, a very potent opioid analgesic marketed under brand names including Palladone and Dilaudid. Hydromorphone is often used medicinally as an alternative to morphine for treatment of pain or as a cough suppressant for painful coughing resulting from continued bronchial irritation. This certified reference standard is suitable for use as a starting material in calibrators or controls for a variety of LC/MS or GC/MS applications from forensic analysis, clinical toxicology, and pain prescription monitoring to urine drug testing and pharmaceutical research.

Application

  • Bifunctional opioid properties: Research on Norhydromorphone demonstrates its potential as a bifunctional opioid with intriguing effects due to substitutions in the N-Phenethyl moiety. This investigation into its unique properties can advance understanding of opioid receptor interactions, relevant to drug development and pain management strategies (Wang et al., 2020).
  • Opioid metabolite detection: Norhydromorphone, identified as a significant opioid metabolite, is crucial for studies using exhaled breath condensate (EBC) techniques. This method, applicable in pharmaceutical research, aids in non-invasive monitoring and analyzing opioid consumption and metabolism (Borras et al., 2019).
  • Capillary electrophoresis in metabolism studies: The use of capillary electrophoresis to study Norhydromorphone metabolism offers a precise analytical method, enhancing the biochemical assay capabilities in opioid pharmacology research (Baldacci and Thormann, 2006).
  • Antinociceptive activities: Identification and synthesis of Norhydromorphone were followed by evaluation of its antinociceptive activities using the rat formalin test. This research contributes to understanding its potential as an opioid analgesic in pain management (Zheng, McErlane, and Ong, 2004).
