General description

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate, referred to as EDTA is a widely used chelator of divalent cations like Ca⁺². It can inhibit proteases dependent on metal ions, such as, calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. EDTA also acts as a chelator of the Zn ion, inhibiting metalloproteases that require zinc for activity.

Application

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has been used along with Na2HPO4 and citric acid for preparing Na2EDTA-McIlvaine buffer. Aqueous solution of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt dihydrate has also been used for photocatalytic hydrogen production
Chelator of divalent cations. Inhibits enzymes, such as metalloproteases, that require divalent cations for activity.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP) is the phenomenon of a spurious low platelet count due to antiplatelet antibodies that cause platelet clumping in blood anticoagulated with EDTA. The aggregation of platelets in EDTA-dependent PTCP is usually prevented by other anticoagulants
