Allgemeine Beschreibung

Hemoglobin is present in the red-blood corpuscles (RBCs) of vertebrates. It is composed of a globular structure with four α-β sub-units.

Anwendung

Hemoglobin from bovine blood has been used as a supplement in tryptone yeast extract salts and glucose (TYESG) agar for performing extracellular proteolytic activity of Flavobacterium psychrophilum. It has also been used as a standard in Raman spectrometry.
Die Löslichkeit von α-Elastin wird bei der Entwicklung von Elastin-mimetischen Biomaterialien genutzt.

Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

Sauerstofftransporter. Das Gleichgewicht zwischen Fe2+ und Fe3+ ist ein physiologischer Indikator für die Oxygenierung des Blutes. Desoxygeniertes Hämoglobin liefert einen Rückführungsmechanismus, indem Nitrit zu NO reduziert wird, d. h. zu einem Vasodilatator, der den Blutfluss an sauerstoffarmes Gewebe erhöht.
