General description

Phosphate Buffered Saline with Tween®-20, or PBST, is primarily used in immunoassays as a washing and blocking buffer. The phosphate buffer maintains a stable pH 7.4, suitable for many biological reactions and assays. The salt or saline solution in PBS-T provides the necessary ionic strength for optimal protein solubility and stability. The addition of 0.05% TWEEN®-20, a non-ionic detergent, helps reduce background signals by blocking non-specific binding sites on proteins. PBST buffer enhances the washing efficiency by removing unwanted substances and limits non-specific antibody binding sites, while preserving the integrity of the target proteins.

Application

Phosphate buffered saline has been used in:

  • western blotting
  • enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • telomere-FISH (Tel-FISH) and telomere/immunostaining-FISH (Teli-Fish)
  • cell isolation
