Descrizione generale

The gene NECAB2 (N-terminal EF-hand calcium binding protein 2) encodes a member of the NECAB family of proteins containing an N-terminal EF-hand domain involved in binding of Ca²⁺. The EF-hand domain contains a single site that binds to calcium and is located next to an NHR domain (NECAB homology domain) that contains a coiled-coil domain. The N-terminus contains a bacterial domain called the DUF176 or ABM motif with unknown function. In rats, it is predominantly expressed in the brain.

The gene NECAB2 (N-terminal EF-hand calcium binding protein 2) encodes a neuronal calcium binding protein that is capable of binding to the C-terminal domain of the adenosine A2A receptor. This binding modulates cell surface expression of the receptor, the ligand-dependent internalization and the receptor-mediated activation of the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) pathway.
