Cell Line Origin
Bovine aortic endothelium
Cell Line Description
Derived from the aorta of a Friesian cow. Cells form "sprouts" after confluence. Infected with Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) which is a common contaminant of ruminants and is non-hazardous to humans. Secretes proteoglycans and collagen.
Culture Medium
DMEM + 2mM Glutamine + 10% Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS).
Subculture Routine
Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:2 to 1:4 i.e. seeding at 3-5x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin; 5% CO2; 37°C. There is a tendancy for the cells to grow fibroblast-like until they are confluent. Once confluent the endothelial morphology prevail
