General description

Raffinose is a natural trisaccharide composed of glucose, galactose, and fructose. It is a water-soluble oligosaccharide, most commonly present in legumes but also in sugar beets and remains during the process in the molasse. It is primarily used as a carbon source in the cultivation of yeast but also has certain cell proliferative and anti-oxidative properties that can prove useful in culture media. Raffinose is used by beneficial probiotic bacteria and an essential component of certain cryoprotectant solutions.

Application

D-(+)-Raffinose pentahydrate can be used as a carbon source for the cultivation of yeast
It is used by beneficial probiotic bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli but could be used as well for differentiation and identification of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecium and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
It can also be used in certain cryoprotectant solutions.
