Free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFAR1) formerly known as G-protein coupled receptor 40 (GPR 40) is predominantly expressed in pancreatic beta cells. In human chromosome, the gene FFAR1 is located on 19q13.12.

Free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFAR1) is activated by binding of medium or long chain free fatty acids. It increases the Ca²⁺ level intracellularly through phospholipase C mediated signalling and that potentially stimulates insulin production. FFAR1 is a potential drug target for metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.
