Allgemeine Beschreibung

FASN (fatty acid synthase) encodes a fatty acid synthase (FAS) enzyme. This gene is located on human chromosome 17.
The enzyme encoded by this gene is a multifunctional protein. Its main function is to catalyze the synthesis of palmitate from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA, in the presence of NADPH, into long-chain saturated fatty acids. In some cancer cell lines, this protein has been found to be fused with estrogen receptor-α (ER-α), in which the N-terminus of FAS is fused in-frame with the C-terminus of ER-α. (provided by RefSeq)

Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

FASN (fatty acid synthase) is essential for de novo fatty-acid synthesis. It plays a major role in glioma neovascularization. The product of this gene helps in the production of fatty acids from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA. Absence of FASN may block migration, invasion and healing of hepatoma carcinoma cells by reducing HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α) and IGFBP1 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1).
