General description

4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE or HNE) is an α,β-unsaturated hydroxyalkenal which is produced by lipid peroxidation in cells. 4-HNE has been hypothesized by several researchers to play a key role in cell signal transduction, in a variety of pathways from cell cycle events to cellular adhesion.
The dimethylacetal derivative is a more stable form of 4-HNE which is good for long term storage of the compound during use. It can be easily converted to 4-HNE in the presence of acid.

The development of oxidative stress, in which production of highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) overwhelms antioxidant defenses, is a feature of many neurological diseases: ischemic, inflammatory, metabolic and degenerative. Oxidative stress is increasingly implicated in a number of neurodegenerative disorders

4-Hydroxynonenal (HNE), one of the major end products of lipid peroxidation, has been shown to be involved in signal transduction and available evidence suggests that it can affect cell cycle events in a concentration-dependent manner. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) can modulate
