General description

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes constitute the largest class of phospholipases, members of which catalyze the hydrolysis of the phospholipid sn-2 ester bond, generating a free fatty acid and a lysophospholipid. PLA2 enzymes are divided into 14 groups (I-XIV), including 20 subgroups (e.g. IA, IB, VIA-1, VIA-2, VIB, etc.), based on sequence homology. Historically, PLA2 enzymes have also been classified based on their biological characteristics into three types, secretory (sPLA2), cytosolic Ca2+-dependent (cPLA2), and cytosolic Ca2+-independent (iPLA2), when sequence data were not available. (PMID 12401193 & 12694560). Cat. No. 07-169-I, Anti-iPLA2, is a purified rabbit polyclonal raised against immunogen sequence present in the group VI SH-iPLA2 & LH-iPLA2 (85/88 kDa calcium-independent phospholipase A2) isoforms, but not found in the 53.2 kDa Ankyrin-iPLA2-1 and 46.5 kDa Ankyrin-iPLA2-2 splice variants encoded by the same PLA2G6 (PLPLA9) gene (UniProt O60733). Immunogen sequence is 100% conserved in murine (NP_058611.1) and rodent (AAC53136.1) species.

Pancreatic islets and insulinoma cells express a novel isoform of group VIA phospholipase A2 (iPLA2 beta) that participates in glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and is not produced by alternate splicing of the iPLA2 beta transcript.
