General description

Ceramide is a sphingolipid with long acyl chain attached to a fatty. It is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum by ceramide synthase.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ceramide functions as a secondary messenger to initiate apoptosis. It also regulates physiological processes and is accountable for the epidermal permeability barrier in eukaryotic membranes.
