General description

Heart Extract Polar comprises the neutral lipid as a major component. Other components include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol.
Polar Lipid Extract is derived from the total lipid extract by precipitation with acetone followed by extraction of the acetone insoluble material with diethyl ether.

Application

Heart Extract Polar may be used:
  • in the preparation of lipid bilayer membrane for ion channel ICln reconstitution
  • in preparation of model membranes for flow fluorometry studies
  • as a lipid standard in thin-layer chromatography

Biochem/physiol Actions

The lipids from the bovine heart mitochondria display a higher phospholipid content compared to liver lipids. Lipid extracts from the mammalian tissues like heart, kidney and liver are used in generating model membranes for mimicking real membranes. These lipid extracts also display nonlamellar phases majorly pertaining to hexagonal, cubic, micellar types at physiological temperatures.
